Perceptions and Reflections

“‘Perceptions and Reflections’ was the culmination of a thought-provoking visual journey between rural and urban locations, capturing metaphorical images, not only for their beauty, but for their integrity.”

“My work explores solitude and loneliness, introspection and escapism, joy and sadness. Human conditions that exist regardless of the external environment.”

Fiona Fryer

Still Life

“My folio has turned out to be a visual diary of an ideal day for me, healthy and nurturing nature.”

“In progressing my photographic learning, I have developed knowledge of lighting, post-production editing and refining the compositional aspects of still life.”

No Mean City

“Glasgow is often given a bad reputation, and through my theme, I have managed to capture a different viewpoint of Glasgow, technically and visually.”

“Some of the strengths in the image making has been the range of experimentation with different viewpoints and vibrant colour, and I feel that these elements have woven themselves to make new representations which show some of the rich characteristics of Glasgow.”

Gemma Nicolson

The Crofting Family

“I want to share with you a wee insight into my crofting and family lifestyle. I take great pride in my passion for crofting and everything it throws at me whether it is good or bad.”

“I have grown up in generations of crofters and now help my father run his 400-hectare croft and common grazing in Swordale on the Isle of Skye. We run approx. 400 sheep, together with eighteen hens and four working collie dogs. Most days my children, Alexander, Eleanor and George play a big part in our lifestyle, and each are showing a natural interest to continue the tradition of crofting. We live in a beautiful part of Skye and have a fascinating lifestyle as my images will show you.”

“I have found that by undertaking this course and gaining an understanding of light, composition, focus and camera settings, I can achieve an eye-catching image. The more photo shoots I take the better. I now understand the process of illumination and what it takes to make a good image. I can recognise how lines and textures, contrasts of dark and lights give form to my compositions.”

“Having completed the Higher in photography I now feel comfortable talking in photography terms which I felt uneasy with at the beginning of the course. I now feel confident looking at images, I can see and understand the creative and technical aspects all of which combine to make a strong image. I can speak about my work to people. But most importantly it has given me the confidence to be creative and push my perceived limitations.”

“I have thoroughly enjoyed this experience and sharing my knowledge with the people both on and off the course. My project shows the highs and lows of crofting, the daily tasks, the busy and the fun times. Whatever the weather, if there is snow on the ground or it is a bright sunny day, the jobs need doing.”

Chris Mullen

The Robing of the Bride

“The series of images I have made are my version of Max Ernst's painting 'The Robing of the Bride' (1940).”

“I was cast as an Angel in The Lyric Club's production of Kinky Boots (Apr 2023) and this also inspired me to make the images which explored the absurd, surreal, drag, theatricality and staging.”
