Family Roots

“Photography as memory, photography as self-therapy. Family roots is a work in continuous evolution, where the roots represent the past, the past that is a continuum of memory, photographs, and documents along with the tactility of surfaces and unique smells that recall moments and places. At the same time, roots are part of who we are and who we will be, something that is and will be part of us.”

My Eggs Are Broken

“This is a conceptual photographic series visualising the effects of Endometriosis, a condition suffered by about 10% of women. Symptoms may include severe abdominal pain and excessive bleeding during periods. The repercussions can affect fertility and have significant negative implications to a person’s quality of life physically, mentally, socially, and economically. In the UK the average waiting time just to get diagnosed for this condition is 7.5 years (Endometriosis UK ND), for treatment even longer.”

“I approached the subject through extensive research and by interviewing women living with the illness. I utilise constructed imagery, using metaphorical objects as a method to examine this subject. Through this work I wish to increase awareness, to medical professionals as well as to the undiagnosed sufferers, to address the fundamental questions surrounding this complex condition, which need to be taken seriously.”

After the Pandemic

“This extended documentary project explores a range of businesses which have returned to trading after the Covid-19 pandemic. The work offers an insight into the architecture, merchandising, seasonal promotions and the symbiotic relationship between the community and Nairn’s High Street. By contrast, the powerful and attractive retail park signage draws the consumer to night-time shopping in our many ubiquitous retail parks.”

“Commercial businesses in both locations have seen changes in shopping trends which are a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. During the crisis, consumers were encouraged to shop on-line rather than visit their local high street or retail park. This resulted in a reduction of footfall and a serious loss of trade which meant businesses could not afford to support their running costs. Consequently, many bricks and mortar stores and shops closed, and many businesses became more reliant on ecommerce for sales. Behind the scenes, small high street businesses continued to trade through on-line and telephone sales and delivering goods for free in the local area. This was a lifeline for the elderly, disabled and for those who were housebound, and many people were too afraid to leave their home.”

“The high street is making a return to normal trading partly because the local community have more appreciation for their service, and equally as important the greeting as you walk through the door, the readiness for a chat and a smile.”
